The Chemical Analyst is responsible for analyzing samples, performing quality control of analytical methods, maintaining and calibrating lab equipment, and troubleshooting analytical methods.
Typical duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  •  Analyze samples submitted to the lab per documented methods and procedures per schedule
  • Prepare standards and references for the lab and process analyzers and complete all required paperwork
  • Analyze and plot SQC samples per procedure and schedule
  • Perform required preventative maintenance on instruments per schedule, including, but not limited to, changing septums and inserts, changing columns, measuring and adjusting flows, cleaning flame tips, wavelength checks, and cleaning and/or changing electrodes
  • Troubleshoot issues with instruments and methods and provide assistance to others when lab problems occur
  • Document and communicate instrument troubleshooting in logs and instrument reliability tracking tools
  • Ensure data and instrument integrity, and report any atypical sample condition, analytical results, and equipment irregularities
  • Retain and dispose of samples according to procedures
  • Support lab projects
  • Complete safety checklists
  • Ensuring that work area is clean and free of hazards
  • Complete daily lab responsibilities
  • Complete required HS&E and skills training per schedule
  • Actively comply with all lab and plant policies and procedures
  • Ensure strict compliance with Shell’s safety policies and procedures, taking immediate corrective action in the event a potential issue or unsafe behavior is observed.
  • Ensure proper turn-over by providing effective communications to the relieving shift
  • Communicate effectively with entire Lab team on issues and opportunities
  • Communicate directly with Operation teams (Utilities, Logistics, etc.) on results or sample issues
  • Participate in efforts to continuously improve laboratory performance in safety, quality, reliability, and costs
  • Actively participate as a team member in the development and performance of group tasks
  • Properly use personal computers for meeting daily performance expectations and accessing lab information and procedures
  • Actively assume personal accountability for meeting Shell’s standards of continuous personal and professional development
